Home charging is the whole point of owning an EV, and a Level 2 circuit is what makes it practical — overnight instead of over three days. The install itself is straightforward when it’s scoped correctly: the right circuit for your vehicle, a panel that can actually carry it, a clean run to where you park, and the permit handled. We quote all of it up front.

What We Handle

  • Level 2 charger installation — hardwired or NEMA 14-50 receptacle, sized for your vehicle’s onboard charger rather than the biggest number on the box.
  • Panel capacity assessment — some homes need a panel upgrade to support a charger; we’ll tell you honestly whether yours does.
  • Garage, carport & outdoor installs — outdoor-rated equipment and conduit where the run is exposed to Tucson sun and monsoon rain.
  • Long conduit runs — detached garages and far-side driveways, wired for the voltage drop over distance.
  • Load management options — when a full panel upgrade isn’t worth it, a load-managed circuit is sometimes the cheaper answer.
  • Permitting — City of Tucson / Pima County permitting for the EV circuit, handled as part of the job.

Level 2 Charger Specs & Brand Compatibility

Level 2 charging runs on a 240-volt circuit — the same kind of circuit an electric dryer or range uses. That is what turns an overnight plug-in into a full battery. Here is how the amps line up:

  • 32-amp charger on a 40-amp circuit — about 7.7 kW. Plenty for a plug-in hybrid or a short daily commute.
  • 40-amp charger on a 50-amp circuit — about 9.6 kW. This is the ceiling for anything plugged into a NEMA 14-50 receptacle.
  • 48-amp charger on a 60-amp circuit — about 11.5 kW, and it has to be hardwired. The fastest Level 2 most homes will ever need.

Code requires the circuit to be sized above the charger’s continuous draw, which is why a 48-amp unit needs a 60-amp breaker and wire to match. It also means more amps is not automatically better. If your car accepts 32 amps, a 60-amp circuit is capacity you paid for and cannot use.

Chargers & Connectors We Install

  • Tesla Wall Connector — hardwired, up to 48 amps. The Universal version adds a J1772 connector so non-Tesla EVs can use it too.
  • ChargePoint Home Flex — adjustable output, available hardwired or as a NEMA 14-50 plug-in.
  • J1772 and NACS connectors — J1772 is the long-standing North American AC plug; NACS is the Tesla-style connector more automakers are moving to. Adapters cover the gap in both directions.
  • Wi-Fi and app-connected units — scheduled charging for overnight rate plans, plus usage tracking.
  • Your own charger — already bought one? We install it, and we tell you before we start if the unit does not match your panel or your car.

What Actually Drives the Cost

Three things: how far the charger is from the panel, whether your panel has capacity for the new circuit, and whether the run is a clean interior path or an outdoor conduit route. A charger on the garage wall directly behind the panel is a short job. The same charger on the far side of a detached garage is a different project entirely, and it’s better to know that before you buy the hardware.

On the vehicle side, more amps isn’t automatically better. Most EVs cap what they’ll accept from a Level 2 charger, so a 60-amp circuit for a car that accepts 32 amps is money spent on capacity you can’t use. We size to your vehicle and to what you’d realistically upgrade to next.

Utility rate plans are worth a look too — time-of-use plans generally reward overnight charging, which is when a Level 2 circuit does its work anyway. Check current plan details directly with your utility, since rate structures change.

Pricing, Up Front

Tucson-area Level 2 EV charger installations typically run about $500–$2,625 depending on panel capacity, conduit length, and whether the run is interior or exterior. A short garage install next to an adequate panel lands near the bottom; a long outdoor run plus a panel upgrade lands near the top.

General Tucson-market range for context, not an Eagle Electric rate card — we’ll confirm your exact price before any work begins. Panel upgrades, if needed, are quoted separately and disclosed before you commit.

EV Charger FAQ

Will my panel handle a Level 2 charger?

It depends on your existing service capacity and everything else already on it — AC, water heater, dryer, pool equipment. We run the load calculation as part of the assessment, before quoting.

Do I need a permit?

In most cases, yes. An EV charger circuit is new circuit work, which the City of Tucson generally requires a permit and inspection for. We handle the permitting as part of the installation.

Should I get a hardwired charger or a 14-50 outlet?

Hardwired units generally support higher continuous current and are the better long-term choice; a 14-50 receptacle is more flexible if you expect to move or swap hardware. We’ll walk through the tradeoff for your setup.

Can you install a charger I already bought?

Yes. Bring us the model and we’ll scope the circuit around it — and tell you honestly if the unit is oversized for what your vehicle can accept.
